Eric Ng Ping Cheun holds a Post Graduate Degree in Institutional Economics and a Master of Business Economics from the University of Aix-Marseille, France, as well as a MBA with specialisation in Finance from the University of Technology, Mauritius.


Eric started his professional career in April 1996 when he joined Coopers & Lybrand, which later merged into PricewaterhouseCoopers. He also worked as credit analyst at the State Bank of Mauritius, as adviser to the Ministry of Finance and as business development manager at Capital Markets Brokers. In August 2004, Eric set up his own consultancy firm, PluriConseil.


Eric has a wide range of experience in economic studies, financial analysis, market research, corporate policy review, project management, corporate relationship and organisational communication. He has provided consultancy services to a wide variety of industries, public corporations, government bodies and international organisations. He is also a trainer in economics and in management, registered at the Mauritius Qualifications Authority.


Well known in the financial services industry, Eric was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of First City Bank (renamed Bank One) from November 2005 to February 2008, and then the Board Chairman of the Development Bank of Mauritius from January 2009 to July 2010. He was also the Board Chairman of the State Trading Corporation, the state-owned commodity importer, from April 2012 to December 2014, as well as the Board Chairman of the Tertiary Education Commission, the regulator of post-secondary education, from June to December 2014. Eric also served as a non-executive director of State Insurance Company of Mauritius, of Cim Foreign Equity Fund, of Airports of Mauritius Ltd and of some subsidiary companies of the State Investment Company group.


Eric is the author of four books, Robinson sur l’île durable (2013), Alice in Dodoland: Looking to the Mauritian economy (2012), A contre-courant. Essais sur l’économie mauricienne (2011) and Mieux comprendre l’économie (2005).


Eric has become a respected business economist and an opinion leader in Mauritius. Since 1996, he has been commenting on public policy issues in the local newspapers through more than 400 opinion pieces written in both English and French. He is regularly quoted in the local media and he participates in televised and radio debates live among other professionals. He presents talks and conferences to academic and business audiences in Mauritius and abroad.


His contribution to the advancement of economic ideas at the national level is widely recognised. In that respect, the Mauritian Institute of Management has awarded him the MIM Honorary Fellow in 2011. He is also a fellow member of the Mauritius Institute of Directors.
